Dr Adam Kowalczyk, a GP in O’Halloran Hill, is well accustomed to helping his patients live healthier, more active lives. He knows his patients well; if there’s diabetes in the family, or heart disease, or anything that puts them at risk Adam will advise his patients to have a screening test and take the steps required to improve their health and fitness levels.

But of course, the patient has to be ready to take those steps. While Adam can make the recommendations, he can’t always be with them physically during their journey to a healthier life. That’s where the Get Healthy coaching service comes in.

“I try to educate my patients. I stress the importance of keeping healthy, and explain that the Get Healthy service is flexible, easy and accessible. There’s no pressure.”

Some of Adam’s patients live in remote areas, which can make physical access to services a challenge. The feedback he has received has given Adam confidence that the patients he has referred to Get Healthy are not only comfortable with accessing the service over the phone, they appreciate the fact that they’re saving themselves a long and often impractical drive.

“To get 45 minute’s advice you might have to travel two hours which is obviously a barrier to getting advice and help.”

The fact that they don’t have to travel, waste time and waste petrol is a huge positive. But of course, the quality of the Get Healthy service is of prime importance. Easy access isn’t worth much if participants aren’t getting the help they need. Fortunately, Adam is getting thumbs-up from the patients who have given him feedback.

The program is anything but a template. Participants have found the Get Healthy service approachable and tailored to their needs. The Get Healthy coaches really take individual circumstances into consideration.

Get Healthy provides personal, customised support for each participant over a 6-month period. Regular phone calls with Get Healthy coaches help participants keep motivated to achieve their goals. Coaches take the time to talk to participants and properly understand their situation, ensuring goals are realistic and achievable.  

Adam is confident he’ll continue to refer patients to the Get Healthy program, and that they will continue to get the help they need to live healthier lives.

“Get Healthy is targeting the reason we get unhealthy and why we end up having 20 tablets by the time we’re 60. It’s a preventative tool that should be better known.”
